Our mission is to improve the lives of working families, to bring economic justice to the workplace and social justice to our nation.
We will build a broad movement of Information and Communication employees of Sri Lanka by organizing them into unions. We will train and develop our members as the next generation of organizers and will empower them to standup on all the issues that affect our lives.
We will make the voices of working families heard nationally and internationally. We will transform the role of the union from an organization that focuses on a member’s rights and privileges to one that gives workers a say in all the decisions that affect our working lives – from capital investments, to the quality of our products and services, to how we organize our work.
We believe that it is the working people, who provide the companies and capitalists with the skills, knowledge and labor that give them their profits. We are firm that without working people, no factory, plant, facility, service or office could run, no phone could ring, no ship could sail, no plain could fly, no periodical printed, no office cleaned, no document typed, no food produced or no food served. Therefore we believe that the working people are in a prime position to change the society, given its essential economic role. We are of the view that only the working people have the capability of building a new society and a better world based on the principles of solidarity and self-management.
We participate in all struggles, fights and in all campaigns and programs which may promote legislations / environment favorable to the interests of the working people or may weaken the conditions for exploitation and capitalism. We are in solidarity with all forms of struggles against exploitation, capitalism and all forms of discriminations at work and in wider society, locally and internationally.
We firmly believe that all kinds of workers and employees have every right to get organized in trade unions, to claim recognition for collective bargaining, and have rights to information, consultation, and time off for trade union duties. We also of the view that all working people must be treated equally by the law and have access to legal representation as a right.
We believe that all people are equal in the opportunities they deserve. This includes differences in race, gender, disability, age, sexual preference and so on. We call for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. Values such as equity between the sexes and interpersonal responsibilities must be developed with moral conscience.
We are committed to bring social and economic justice locally and internationally by enabling working people to have a voice in the changing global economy and in their communities. We also believe that social injustice in all of its forms, racism, sexism, bigotry, hunger, homelessness, etc., and the resulting wars are the consequences of the deliberate acts of those few who own most of the world’s resources to keep the working people of the world divided.
We believe all work has dignity and all workers deserve respect. We believe quality housing, food, medical care, education, respect and hope are the basic rights of every individual. We believe that families and individuals must be guaranteed decent minimum living standards through social security systems.
Human societies must operate with the understanding that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. We are committed to maintain an ecological balance and live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet. We support a sustainable and planned socialist society which utilizes resources in such a way those future generations will benefit and not suffer from the profit hungry capitalist practices at percent.
8.FUTURE FOCUS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Our actions and policies are motivated by long-term goals. We are committed to protect valuable natural resources, while developing a sustainable and planned socialist economy. Our aim is to assure that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions.
9.COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
We proactively engage, listen to, and partner with people and organizations within our country and around the world to identify and address the most pressing social needs. We know that fundamental social rights which have been adopted by the ILO and the UN are still ignored and violated in our country and across the world. We support programs to defend fundamental human and social rights within our country and in other countries and regions.
10.PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
We encourage our members and all people to fight to defend their rights and privileges and to fulfill their individual potential, and, at the same time, to join with people and organizations around the world to eradicate exploitation and to foster peace, economic justice, social harmony and the health of the planet through a democratic, socialist, self managed planned society.
